The Different Forms Of Media
Video Games
Sound Creation in video games differ from cutscenes, in a games trailer or for atmosphere in parts to further entice the player in that video game world sound also is a big factor in making a game realistic from guns to car engines to even the sound of the wind. These all allow developers to create the sounds and feeling that they want to show the player. Sound creation is used in computer games. The sound creation adds to the overall playability and experience of the computer game.
Movies
In the film industry, sound creation is used to improve soundtracks. Film composers are employed to create the music that goes along the acting in films – it goes from every little thing that goes on in the movie, for example, pin drops, loud thuds. sound effects that are also used in films to create very unique and one of a kind experiences to enhance or exaggerate the feeling of the visual image your seeing. Foley: the best foley art is well integrated into the set of a film that it doesn’t get recognised by the audience. it almost helps to create some kind of sense of reality within the moment of the movie` and without these crucial noises from the background the movie would move in an unnatural way as well as being very quiet.
TV Adverts
in TV Adverts we sound creation is used to add a bit more of an actual reason of purpose of what the adverts main point was to show us. the people or advertisers spend a huge amount of money as on social media ad spending is estimated to rise 21 percent to $58 billion while video ad spending is rising 19 percent to $32 billion. they spend a lot of money on the advert to give it the memorable feeling which makes you want to see the ad again.i have found a BMW M4 advert which shows numerous layers of sound put together to give us one delightful sound:
Radio Broadcasts
Radios use sound to introduce a person they would either play music or a sound to give a signal as radios are not visual they would have play some type of sound for you to understand. they use a range of techniques to create sound to make their broadcasts more interesting then any other one.most of them use something called jingles to introduce their frequencies.
Animation
Animation uses very different sound creation as its used for almost everything from Movement to Actions. Animation has so many possibilities and the potential is increased with a greater sound effect on the animation itself, for example.
Types Of Sound Creation
Foley
as shown in various videos Foley is basically when you use something from the real world to make a sound in music or sound tracks or even movies. Here is an example:
Ambience
is shown and used to create an atmospherical change in the sound of the background but is usually found being made for a setting mood in a film or even video game.
Dialogue/Voiceovers
You will find that most of these people are narrators who are there to either talk about or describe something or tell a story for example there is David Attenborough who tends to narrate Planet Earth. Planet Earth is a Nature documentary.
Underscore
this is mostly used in a musical theatre or film production underscoring is the playing of music quietly under spoken dialogue or a visual scene. usually we see this done when the people are trying to establish a mood or theme which is frequently used to recall and/or foreshadow a musical theme which is supposed to important to the character(s) and/or a plot point either onstage or offscreen.
Special/Spot Effects
A sound effect most often consists of more than one part – usually several parts. It’s like a mini-drama, with a beginning, middle, and end. It is meant to indicate some action or event, i think that it should be almost following an action to complete
A door opening isn’t just a click of the latch . Answering the telephone must of been more simple and quiet than the actual click that we hear like we are actually picking up the receiver
Most effects you hear – especially in the movies – are actually the result of at least two people, long after filming, doing something with two or more objects, half the time it is most probably unrelated to what you are expecting/ supposed to be hearing
Methods of sound creation
Physical Props
All the scenery, furniture and props the audience sees at a production of a play make up the set design. The set designer’s job is to design these physical surroundings in which the action will take place. See the above video.
Environmental Sounds
Wildlife film soundtracks are a combination of sounds recorded in the wild during the filming, or could be recorded in the wild previously as well as sounds that must be recreated in a studio and of course the music
Some sounds are removed because they would distract you from the tone of the film (e.g. cars flying by could be replaced by music over gunshots or overcoming helicopters)
Sound Synthesis
This is where the sound is recorded off midi or either digital programs however it could be made by someone who is used to using synthesiser.
Digital Sample Manipulation
This is used to change the ways we hear a sound to a slight change to a big one this is made by FX or equalisers which is usually used to improve the sound of the mixes with the genre or even style of music
Effect Libraries
Effect libraries is where a large amount of sounds the Data is used for different sounds or effects usually used in movies to make a certain noise humans could not make for example we would’t be able to make that robotic sound so we would have to use natural elements to do that
All of these tools are used in sound creations as well as these methods here I’ve use logic pro x and some foley sounds to make my own background to a trailer that i have picked.
EXAMPLES
I am going to use a cartoon clip to show you how they make the sound and also a TV ad.
In this Tom and Jerry clip they have used music, voice and a guitar to go with the image. In cartoons they use instruments for the underscore, physical objects for the sound effects and nature sounds too.
In this TV ad they use ambience to help. They also use voice overs. They use drums and instruments to help. They use foley for the climbing bits. They use sound effects for when they are flying too.
This is how i made my piece
As you can see i did a lot of automation
This is the underscore
This is the voiceovers
This is the ambience
This is the foley recording
I used a sampler to get this in time
This is the sound synthesis
I adjusted the resonance to change the sound.
Unit 4 Review
I did the Lexus advert.
I like the car so I picked it.
These are the sounds I used.
My piece has met the brief and i used lots of sound creation ideas.
I used lots of sounds – some midi and some audio. I recorded my voice at the end.
I used some interesting sounds for when the glass smashes. I downloaded some engine noises for the car from youtibe.
I used strings and voices as they have long sounds.
I used automation to bring sounds in and out.
Weaknesses
I think some of the engine noises could have been better in synch with the video.
I also should have added a glass smashing sound at the end.
Overall, it is good for what it is.
