Sound Creation:
Sound Creation or Sound Design is how you create different kinds of music for different kinds of media like TV and film.
Different forms of Media:
Video Games:
Sound Creation is used a lot in video games. Recording engineers create all the sound effects and music in a game. The sound makes the game realistic from the different guns to the different engine sounds even to the sound of the atmosphere. This allows game developers to create different sounds that they want to show the player.
Movies:
Movies also use sound creation mainly for trailers they also use it for the atmosphere when the movie is showing a different landscape. The film industry uses a lot of sound creation for the movies soundtracks as well.
TV Adverts:
Advertisers spend huge amounts of money to create the most memorable scenes to capture the buyers. They use loads of techniques to make their adverts stand out from the rest.
Here is the LG advert.
Animation:
Sound Design in cartoons and animation is used to add to the viewers experience. The music that they use can set the scene, the music can be used for an intense scene or an emotional scene. This video shows the process they went through to make the sounds for the film WALLE.
Radio:
Radios uses various sounds to introduce a guest or a piece of music that they are about to play. They uses these sounds as a signal to indicate as they are not visual.
Theatre:
They use lots of sound creation in the theatre. Here is a video that explains it.
Types of sound creation:
Foley:
Foley is when you use real objects to make sound in music or movies.
Ambience:
This is used to create an atmospheric background this is usually used in movies and video games.
Dialogue/Voiceovers
This is when a narrator describes something or tells a story, like David Attenborough who narrates nature documentaries.
Methods of sound creation:
Physical props:
All of the furniture and props that the audience sees on stage makes up the set design. The set designer’s job is to design the the physical props.
Environmental sounds:
Wildlife soundtracks are a mix of sounds recorded in the wild and sounds that are re-created in the studio. Sometimes they remove some sounds because they can distract the tone of the film.
Sound synthesis:
Sound synthesis is when the sound is recorded off of MIDI but it can be made by a user with synthesis.
Digital Sample Manipulation:
This is how people change the ways we hear a sound to a slight change this is made by FX or equalisers usually to improve sound so it better mixers with the style of music.
Effect Libraries:
This is where large amounts of data is used for different sounds or effects this is usually used in movies to make certain noises that humans can’t make.
EXAMPLES
Examples: In this example they have used sound design to make the advert. They have car noises at the beginning. They have used a song to go along with the advert. They have used sound effects for the engine warning light. They have also used sounds for the doors opening and seatbelts. They might have used foley for these.
In this film clip they use sound design too. They use instruments for the underscore. They have recorded the dialogue. They use sound effects for Thor when he gets up from the table. Probably foley for this. When thor goes for his hammer they use sound effects to make this more dramatic.
Here is my sound creation – i chose Game of Thrones
Here is my Foley
I used a sampler to get it in time
Here is my underscore
This is also underscore
Here are the ambient sounds
Here is the voice over at the end – game of Thrones
I modified the sound – synthesis
I changed the way the timpani sounds
Unit 4 review
Game of Thrones
I am pleased with my piece of sound creation. My piece has met the brief. I used lots of sound creation techniques when i was making it. The sounds work well together and they suit the images in the movie clip. The midi sounds are good and provide an underscore. I think the audio sounds work well too. I could improve the piece by adding more effects and reverb to make it sound a bit spooky because that would fit the clip.
I used a sampler to help get my sounds more in time. That worked well.
I could have tried out more ideas with changing the sounds to create more interesting textures.
I think overall the piece is quite good. I could be improved if I spent more time on it. Unfortunately, I ran out of time.
